In the sixth year of Baoyou, the Mongol army pressed the border, and Fan Chengshun general Zhang Tianshun saved the people of Fancheng, handed over the yellow dragon sword containing the anti-yuan roster to the partial general Fan Guoxing, and then killed himself, so that Guoxing sent his head to surrender the enemy. Since then, Guoxing has been known as a traitor, and his son Fan Qiu was born in the countryside and lived incognito, and many years later he was discovered by Mrs. Qiu Wan, who "pierced the heart with a sword". During Qiusheng and Guoxing's exile, he met Liu Qinglian, who was ordered by his mother to insist on a duel with Mrs. Wan and killed her with her own hands. Jia Yucun, a scholar, is exiled to Yangzhou and becomes a guest of the salt inspector, Lin Ruhai. He teaches Lin's daughter, Lin Daiyu, and escorts her to the Jia family's Rongguo Mansion. Jia Yucun helps Daiyu's uncle, Jia Zheng, and is reinstated. Daiyu becomes close to her cousin, Jia Baoyu, but Wang Xifeng, a daughter-in-law, schemes to marry Baoyu to Xue Baochai, a relative of the family's matriarch. When Baoyu falls ill after losing a jade, the family forces him to marry Xue Baochai, pretending that she is actually Daiyu. Daiyu is heartbroken and dies shortly after. The family eventually declines, and Baoyu becomes a monk.

In the late Ming dynasty, the son of an anti-Qing general, Yuan Chengzhi, seeks revenge for his father's death. He learns martial arts from the Golden Snake, falls in love with his daughter, and becomes a skilled fighter. Along with his companions, Chengzhi travels to find a safe haven, encountering danger and hardships along the way. He gains a following and becomes a respected leader, but ultimately decides to leave the chaos of the world behind and find peace on a remote island.

After the death of his fiancee (Pauline Yeung), triad legend Ming Tin (Alex Man) washes his hands of the underworld, retreating to a quiet life running a small mahjong parlor. He originally disavowed himself of romance as well, but two very different women (Tanny Tien and Teresa Mo) wander into his life. Ming Tin lives with his mother (Lee Heung Kam), uncle (Ng Man Tat), and cousin Gam Sui (Stephen Chow). Ming Tin and Gam Sui are as close as brothers, but Gam Sui's father has a grudge against Ming Tin, leading to many barbs and bickers in this odd family. When Gam Sui and his father unwittingly stumble onto the wrong sides of the track, it's up to Ming Tin to pull them back with his old connections.
