Idealistic and passionate rookie lawyer Yen-ching takes on the case of a death row prisoner Ming-te, who has been sentenced to death five times. The Qiaotou youth LI Wen-hsin was arrested during the December 10, 1979, demonstration spearheaded by Formosa Magazine. After being thrown into prison, he learned a way to survive: mixing saltwater with white rice. He also recalled wonderful times with his girlfriend A-chun, the joys and suffering he shared with friends and family, and his longing for democracy. In this prison, referred to by inmates as the “Hotel Saltwater,” Wen-hsin and his companions, though suffering greatly, never let their thirst for freedom be extinguished.

JIANG has just begun his career as an after-school tutor. He has a great sense of humor in teaching but suffers from intimacy issues due to the influence of his parents who endure lifelong mental illnesses. Failing to obtain commitment, JIANG’s girlfriend Lan decides to run away from JIANG and works as an elementary school teacher in a remote village.
