In 1928 San Francisco, lesbian couple Florence and Lucille prepare to host a Halloween party. Florence is an up-and-coming jazz singer, and she is starting to get her big break. She feels tied down by her girlfriend, Lucille, due to her young age and immaturity. Lucille is unwilling to let go of the relationship, despite its imperfections. The two argue throughout the evening, trying to save face for most of the night until Florence’s secret is revealed accidentally by one of their friends, Bernard. Both of their frustrations with each other and the state of their partnership boils over as Lucille finds out that Florence plans to take a job in New York City, moving away from her and not telling Lucille.

In 1969 San Francisco, John and Patti’s relationship comes to an end after two and a half years, torn apart by her hesitance to fully emotionally invest and his longing for something deeper. Though they break up, financial pressures force them to continue living in the same apartment, each watching the other explore new connections. While Patti quickly embraces her newfound freedom, John struggles until he meets Rob, who offers the emotional stability he’s been seeking. When John decides to move in with Rob, a final confrontation reveals that while Patti wants to rekindle their love, John has moved on, leaving them both to come to terms with the end of their time together.
