20th century computer games designer Scott, Civil War buff, buys an antique desk from that era and, while polishing it, he discovers a secret compartment in which sits an unmailed letter--a letter written by a young poet named Lizzie over a century earlier. Touched by her yearning for passion, he writes her back, egged on by his mystically inclined mother. Magically, his letter reaches Lizzie and they begin a correspondence that threatens Scott's impending marriage but promises to bring fulfilment to Lizzie. Spanning the Civil War to the present, the perils of Lizzie's war-torn situation threaten her safe passage into the future. Will their love endure the test of time?

Alex inherited her recently deceased grandmother's cottage in Wales. Having lost her husband a year ago and being broke, she moves there with her son, hoping to quickly sell the cottage, so she can use the money to purchase an antiquities shop in London. But with the cottage in dire need for repairs and no potential buyers in sight, she is forced to stay for some time. While there, she meets up with an old friend of hers, who wants to be more than friends, and also runs into an intriguing local politician who is already engaged. She supports the politician's goal of creating a nature preserve right outside of town, although she falls short of pledging some of her land to the cause in order to not upset potential buyers of her property. When her aunt suffers a fall and gets hospitalized, Alex temporarily takes over her aunt's shop. While the love triangle gathers steam between Alex and her two suitors, a local gold digger suddenly claims that there might be gold right under her ...

51-year-old Herbert Strehlow, a furniture restorer, falls in love with 21-year-old Lea, who has not spoken a word since childhood when her father killed her mother. She bears a striking resemblance to Herbert's dead wife. They get married, but their relationship seems doomed, until gradually each one manages to penetrate the mysterious world of the other, and they begin to realize that they are bound by a kind of spiritual relationship. For Lea it is the death of her mother, for Herbert it is the death of his first wife. His hard exterior slowly beings to thaw, and he starts to show feelings and responses that soften Lea's initial hatred and fear of him, and which put their relationship in a more positive light.
