Les Malheurs de Paul Cadéac (2023)
"The Misfortunes of Paul Cadéac" shows the ravages of time on a copy of the film "Quai des blondes", the only realization that Paul Cadéac shot in 1954. By isolating and slowing down the most damaged photograms of the French producer's film, I managed to create an object with abstract shapes and, insidiously, to give another life to a leading artistic work. Gérard Courant

Les Malheurs de Raoul Walsh (2012)
Les Malheurs de Raoul Walsh shows the ravages of time on the print of the film Regeneration that Raoul Walsh shot in 1915. By selecting and slowing down the most damaged parts of the American filmmaker's film, I managed to create an object with abstract forms and, paradoxically, to give a second life to a major artistic work.

Compression Alphaville de Jean-Luc Godard (1995)
To mark the 30th anniversary of Kodak's invention of the Super 8 format, the Close Encounters of the 8th Type in Tours, France, asked filmmakers to make a film in this format. I was the only filmmaker to respond favorably to this request, and I created a tribute to 1965 by "compressing" a cult film from that year: Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville . Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville Compression is a 25-fold reduction of Alphaville , the 1965 masterpiece Jean-Luc Godard directed, starring Anna Karina, Eddie Constantine, Howard Vernon, and Akim Tamiroff, from a runtime of 1 hour 30 minutes into a 4-minute film. The film is "compressed" in the manner of a work by César. But unlike the work of this artist, who compressed everyday objects, Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville Compression compresses an artistic object! The feat and challenge of Jean-Luc Godard's Alphaville Compression was to create a total compression: in this film, not a single shot from the original film is missing!

Magdalena Montezuma (2010)
In March 1977, I published a poem about Magdalena Montezuma, actress, collaborator, and inspiration of German filmmaker Werner Schroeter, in issue 13 of the magazine Les Soleils d'Infernalia . This poem was included in my book Werner Schroeter, published by the Cinémathèque Française and the Goethe Institut in January 1982. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of my encounter with this brilliant actress, who passed away too soon, at the Berlin Film Festival in February 1980, I printed the text of this poem directly onto around twenty frames of The Death of Maria Malibran , Werner Schroeter's masterpiece.

Compression À bout de souffle de Jean-Luc Godard (2004)
French sculptor César Baldaccini, commonly known as just César (1921-1998), began creating his “directed compressions” of objects in the 60’s, often with his colleague Arman, making monumental series of cars transformed into compacted iron bundles by a hydraulic press. Influenced by these techniques, in the 90’s Courant started making one of his series, out of compressed versions of films.

Vacances par procuration (2024)
In the fall of 2023, I bought a used Sony video camera from the United States with the MiniDV cassette system online. It was an old model released in February 2007! Inside the camera was a cassette with 23 minutes of recorded footage from a vacation in Mexico. It's impossible to know when these images were filmed. In 2007? In 2023? Definitely between these two dates... Vacation by Proxy is these 23 minutes of film that I then reworked by transforming the image and the sound.

Lyon en 96 minutes (2023)
"Lyon in 96 minutes" is, with a subjective camera and in a single sequence shot lasting one hour and 36 minutes, a stroll through the city of Lyon which begins on the Fourvière hill and its basilica and ends on the other Lyon hill, that of Croix-Rousse. Between these two summits, the film plunges into Old Lyon by taking the Chemin des Rosaires, the climb (in the direction of descent) of Chazeaux, crosses the Place Saint-Jean bordered by the cathedral of the same name which it visit, then runs along the Palais de Justice, the banks of the Saône which it crosses at the Feuillée bridge. The journey continues via rue d'Algérie, the famous Place des Terreaux with its town hall and the Palais Saint-Pierre, rue Puits Gaillot, the slopes of Croix-Rousse with its multitude of steps and staircases which lead us on the tray. The film ends on the esplanade of Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse and the Gros Caillou of ice house origin. - Gérard Courant
