It's been a year since Moritz Wagner and his daughter Aluna turned their backs on Kenya and moved to Hamburg. They searched in vain for Farrah, Moritz's wife and Aluna's mother. Moritz's strenuous, sometimes traumatic job as a war photographer had put a lot of strain on their marriage. Farrah took some time off and disappeared without a trace. Now news reaches Moritz from the Kenyan police that his wife has been recovered dead from her car in Kenya. Shortly after, Farrah's sister Pascale suggests that Farrah was not the victim of an accident, but was murdered. Moritz sets off for Kenya. But when he wants to meet his sister-in-law, she dies in front of him. Moritz is now considered a suspect and has to justify himself to the Kenyan police and flee. Together with Caroline, a shirt-sleeved used car saleswoman and good friend of Farrah, Moritz sets out to find the secret behind Farrah's death. The trail leads them both to the Congo.

Johanna, a beautiful brunette, comes back to her father's house after accomplishing a training course in a car factory in Turin. At home, she reads a note her father had ensconced in the welcome bouquet of flowers: «You're back at last.» Then, she meets her best friend, Jasmin, and they go together to see their group of friends # all have grown up together by the lake. It comes up they have all received a message similar to her own. Next evening, these young persons are having a good time, dancing, flirting, drinking a lot, as a retarded person watches them, and evokes a memory of a similar evening years ago... Then, people start dying around, and in the peaceful lake that hides mysteries they share.

By chance, Lenny, a young children's book author, discovers a roll of film in an old camera. Curious, he has it developed and is astonished to find that the pictures must have been taken in Prague in 1968, towards the end of the Prague Spring. One of the photos shows a young woman. To find out more about her, Lenny publishes it in a Prague daily newspaper. The effect is disastrous: his family's house is broken into and his father is murdered. Lenny is certain that there is a connection, because the photos have also disappeared. But neither his sister Isabell nor the police believe him. Shortly afterwards, he receives an anonymous letter containing only a Prague address. With this vague clue, Lenny sets off for the Czech capital.

The lawyer Franziska Schlüter works for the Aescuria insurance and is responsible for processing applications for disbursement of occupational disability policies. The company policy provides as a guideline to prevent the approval as far as possible. When the widow of a victim, who committed suicide after being rejected, storms the office to loudly accuse these machinations, Franziska begins to doubt the correctness of her work and to rethink. She quits and works as a freelance lawyer to help injured parties legally to get their rights. First she deals with the case of a family in the neighborhood. The father has been in a wheelchair since an accident. However, the Strelaus have not yet seen any money from the insurance company. Initially not taken seriously by colleagues, the shy woman takes on the fight against the health insurance system and has to fight against resistance and above all with her own self-doubt.
