The elf population is declining, and there are already several homes that will be without elves this Christmas. Things can't move fast enough—we need more elves! But how do we get them? Pyrus comes up with the solution: children must attend elf school and be trained as reserve elves. Pyrus, Kandis, and Gyldengrød are joined by Fix and Fumle, and together they set about establishing an elf school in the National Archives.

By chance, Pyrus has found Gyldengrød's old laboratory, which has been locked up for many years. When the National Archivist's son-in-law Krusø catches a severe winter cold, Pyrus is eager to help and tries to cure Krusø with an elixir from Gyldengrød's laboratory. The effect is disastrous. Krusø shrinks to the size of an elf and tumbles around confused in the archive. Krusø comes into possession of the elves' magic book, which enables him to conjure himself into various books. And misfortune befalls the country's prime minister as Krusø tours the telephone directories, the overview of traffic planning in Copenhagen, and worst of all, the finance bill itself. Pyrus is unhappy. For once, he tried to do the right thing, and now everyone is even more angry with him than before. How can he make amends? He must accomplish something truly great.
