Søren Holm becomes a pastor in the small town of Harslev. Somewhere on the island of Funen, where the hedgerows surround the meandering fields, lies Uglegaarden. During the Occupation, the young freedom fighter Søren had a good working relationship with a comrade in the resistance movement, despite the fact that Søren was a social democrat and his comrade a communist. After the liberation in May 1945, the differences that had been less important during the war begin to stand in Søren's way. Both his friendship with his comrade and his relationship with the wealthy Inger fall apart in the summer of liberation. But through his work in the Social Democratic Party, Søren experiences a renewed enthusiasm and resumes his relationship with Inger. Together, they actively engage in the party's work and both see it as an extension of the struggle for freedom during the occupation. Denmark's entry into NATO is particularly important.

Fritz og Jesper følges ad til Danmark, hvor Fritz glæder sig voldsomt til gensynet med sine plejeforældre, komponisten Emilius Andersen (Richard Christensen) og hans kone (Helga Frier). De var de sødeste mennesker overfor deres Wienerbarn, og deres hjem står i Fritz' hukommelse som indbegrebet af idyl og harmoni.

Venus aux belles fesses, or Venus with the beautiful buttocks, is the name given to a statuette by the famous Swedish sculptor Sergel, and this small work of art, a draft in fired clay, plays a significant role in this fantastic story. In a strange way, Venus intervenes in the turbulent fate of art historian Hannibal Svanø and creates conflicts for many others. After spending the whole summer leading a nomadic but rather pleasant life, interrupted only by occasional periods of work with old friends around the country, Svanø now sets off for the capital.
