A group of German infantrymen of the First World War live out their lives in the trenches of France. They find brief entertainment and relief in a village behind the lines, but primarily terror fills their lives as the attacks on and from the French army ebb and flow. One of the men, Karl, goes home on leave only to discover the degradation forced on his family by wartime poverty. He returns to the lines in time to face an enormous attack by French tanks.

Ann Dexter, daughter of an itinerant Haiti waterfront character, Carl Dexter, brings a golden idol, which her father her stolen at a voodoo ceremony, to Bill Buchanan, who is known along the waterfront as a man eternally on a treasure hunt. He agrees to let Ann accompany him in search of the treasure after a native he befriended gives him directions and certain voodoo secret charms. They follow an underwater passage to an island where they find a Pagan tribe. They learn that the golden idol is a burial symbol representing the dead and that hundreds of idols are at the bottom of the sacred burial lake.

Clairvoyant gifted Romarei (Carola Kayser) manages to save her childhood friend Lorenz Ophofen from what would have been a fatal accident. Prang, a greedy widow, decides to gain some money by using that gift of her daughter by adoption, Romarei, and she sends her to Boris Olinzoff's luxury estate, in East Africa. Boris is the CEO of a powerful economic group, and soon Romarei gets herself in danger. Romarei misses Lorenz, who tries her to uncover the identity of Boris' mortal enemy Masareff... But when Boris travels to Germany, Romarei is kidnapped.
