Jack Lane (William Stowell) has made an invention for photographing wild animals. It consists of a camera with a trigger -- when the trigger is stepped on by a passing animal, a flash goes off and the camera shoots the picture. Lane goes up to the mountains to try out his new contraption. When a recluse refuses to let him spend the night in his cabin, Lane goes to sleep out of doors, with the camera set up near by. In the middle of the night, he is awakened by the flash and the sound of gunshots. Trekking back to his own cabin the next day, he develops the picture, which is of a girl holding a rifle. He returns to the recluse's cabin where he is arrested for murder.

In medieval Ireland Willy Brennon is a daring adventurer and highwayman in love with young Molly Bawn. Molly lives with her father in a house belonging to the mayor, whose son Jack is infatuated with Molly as well. Willy and Jack at first hold animosity towards each other but soon become allies. The mayor hates Willy and is determined to capture him but through the machinations of Molly and Jack, Willy makes a break for liberty. In time the young lovers are reunited and sail to America.

Lil Magill, who came to work on his newspaper, becomes infatuated with Paige, as he is with her, and they become lovers. After several years Lil has become a successful author but Paige has tired of her. Their estrangement grows when Lil takes the side of striking miners against him.
