Lam Siu-ming cannot afford tuition and quitted school. His teacher Ms. Chui intercedes with the principal in vain. She quits. Chui became an orphanage director. She suffers from the orphans’ mischief, but she treats them with love and honesty instead of punishing them. She gets recognition from kids and colleagues. Siu-ming is expelled. He dares not go home and lives on pickpocketing with street boys. Chui learns that Siu-ming is missing and looks for him. Siu-ming feels ashamed and avoids her. Chui finds Siu-ming and takes him and the street boys to the orphanage, yet they cannot be disciplined and escape. Little Bully runs after them, but is beaten down on the railway. Siu-ming's legs are cut off by the train when he tries to save Little Bully. The escaped kids regret for this. Chui's cousin wants her to go abroad together, but at the farewell party, he is moved by the orphans, so he does not force the plan, and decides to stay behind to serve the kids.

Inside a café, on Christmas Eve. Chim Kei meets an enigmatic woman named Mimi Wong who introduces herself as the daughter of an upper-crust family. But the infatuated writer is struck by a spasm of sorrow when he later sees Mimi make her appearance as a taxi-dancer at a party. The lovers are reconciled by the story of her plight told by her sister Annie. However, Mimi goes missing on the engagement day. By a stroke of luck, Chim runs into the elusive woman again and finds out how she was forced into prostitution by her drug-addict husband, his childhood best friend and benefactor Chan Hung-kit. Chim leaves dejectedly, and has since been idling his days away. The frail Mimi confesses her love for Chim on her deathbed, and from not far away, Chan has ended his own life.

The Flying Dragon gang goes on a rampage and the police Inspector is at his wits' end. He then commissions Wong Ngung, Wu Ngar and Heung Nga to help him catch the gang members. Suet-ying, a young woman, is addicted to gambling and owes a huge sum to the gambling den that belongs to the Flying Dragon gang. She has even signed IOUs. When the younger sister of Ying's husband sees that Ying is weighed down by worries, she asks Wu Ngar for help. Wu Ngar sneaks into the gambling den, but her behaviour is suspected by the gang leaders, Tai-kit and Tai-hong. Fortunately, Wong Ngung saves her. To get back the IOUs, Ying falls under the control of Hong and Kit. Master Lung has evil designs on Ying. He first kills Kit and seizes Ying. Hong then shoots and kills Lung. Wong Ngung and her two partners get back the IOUs for Ying. They notify the police Inspector to arrest the members of the Flying Dragon gang. Hong is shot and injured by Wong Ngung. He is arrested with the other gang members.

Ghost-faced To is murdered in a mortuary after paying a visit to Muk Lan-fa. A set of teeth is found missing from another dead body. Lan-fa’s sister Sau-chen follows the leads on a business card To left behind to a dental clinic which suddenly bursts into flame. The news of her sister’s abduction by the infamous Japanese criminal Katsu Saburo soon reaches Lan-fa. Working together with her police friend Ko Cheung to crack the case, Lan-fa analyses photo evidences in minute detail. The duo order the retrieval of a pole that has survived the explosion intact while lying in wait at the clinic. Sau-chen, who has escaped, saves the duo from the chiller where they are detained. Inspector Yeung retrieves the operation plan concealed in the pole and the secret codes in the set of teeth, but the spook is shot dead by Katsu before he could reach the Hell’s Gate and the treasure buried there. Constable Kwan, and others and wipes out the gang at the Hell’s Gate.

Guerrilla fighter Lam Suet-fan is in charge of the operation which succeeds in crippling the traitorous activities of Ting Chuen. Through the discreet help from Ting's cousin Sai-kit who goes undercover as the traitor's house guest, a series of offensives are launched, resulting in heavy casualties in the Japanese camp. With pressure mounting on both sides, guerrilla leader Lady Spy No.1 entrusts the mission of bombing Ting's signal tower to Lam who will then lead the troop in retreat. The mission fails, leading to the arrest of Lam and Sai-kit. Laura puts her life at stake in order to accomplish the mission and before she expires, reveals herself to be their leader and names Lam her successor to lead the troop to its stronghold in the north. Poor teacher Chan Chi-hong, his wife Lee Yuk-mei and their five children survive on his meagre pay. When he is laid off by two schools in a row, the family runs into difficulties. The children resort to begging on the streets to pay the mother's medical bills. Turning to writing, Chan's novel fails to find a publisher and, worse still, he comes down with tuberculosis. Dealt a further blow by the death of the youngest daughter and the pressures from the loan sharks, Chan contemplates killing himself and his family but changes his mind when he witnesses the sacrifices made by other parents for their children. He vows to be a dutiful father and tries his best to overcome their adversities. His novel is finally published and sells well. Through thick and thin, the family at last sees the light at the end of the tunnel.
