Vera Kasatkina, in her youth, experienced an emotional trauma: her husband left her and their child. She is 27 years old and has long given up on the idea of personal happiness. When she meets Volodya Chizhov, who is younger than her, she sincerely offers to help him prepare for his university entrance exams. Deep feelings begin to develop between them. Vera's mother is adamantly against this relationship, and Vera's colleagues have already figured it out and are making fun of her. The main character is the chekist Fyodor Dyatlov. He is in love with his friend Hippolytus' sister, the educated, intelligent Irina. At the same time, he harshly pursues the younger brother of Hippolytus and Irina Valerik. He is also a security officer, but in his youth he was tempted by a bribe. Fyodor investigates the case himself and puts Valerik in the hands of higher security officers. His possible happiness with Irina and his friendship with Hippolytus are at stake. This lavish Soviet/Czech co-production is based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's famous novel, The Gambler, which tells the story of a Russian living in Germany, in a gambling resort. This film is set at the turn of the century, and was filmed in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czechoslovakia. Played by Nikolai Burlyayev, the gambler succumbs completely to his addiction, using up every resource he has (human, spiritual and financial) in his wagering, finally becoming a rootless drifter.
