To alert public opinion, the villagers decide to do something. This "something" will be a play describing the life of their saint patron. Trouble follows, partly fueled by the short-tempered mayor.

Venturi was once the king of the Pigalle underworld. Today, he lives in retirement with his wife, in an estate near Chantilly. He still receives the takings from a few hôtels de passe and cabarets, enabling him to subsist without financial worries. But a gang of young hoodlums follows in his footsteps, committing robberies and picking fights in the establishments controlled by Venturi. His faithful companion Cristiani is murdered, as is his wife Germaine. Venturi is determined to take revenge.

The story is a comedy about two dimwitted men from Brussels, Bossemans and Coppenolle. Much of the comedy comes from the fact that the characters all speak in the local Brussels dialect, which added to its popularity in Brussels and Wallonia. The plot broadly parodies Romeo & Juliet, with the contending families on opposite side of the contemporary Brussels football rivalry between Daring Club de Bruxelles and Union Saint-Gilloise.

Sophie Mallet is the lively manager of a detective agency, assisted by Emile Gachit, her conscientious but not very effective right-hand man. One day a fellow named David entrusts her a pack of cigarettes that she is supposed to hand over to a certain John Smith. But David soon disappears while John Smith is murdered. Moreover, a lot of dubious characters prove "very interested" in the pack of cigarettes... Which will keep Sophie and Emile for some time...!
