The story of a young man from Burgenland named Franz who works for an expanding construction company. The boss urgently needs workers and tries to tie Franz to his company by offering him a promotion to foreman. Franz is undecided. After some hesitation, however, he accepts an offer from a large construction company. Franz wants to start a family with his pregnant girlfriend Erna and build a house. She faints in an accident and Franz goes to find a doctor. The doctor is with the builder, who stands in the way of the desperate young man. Franz pushes the builder aside and injures his arm in the process. Franz is then reported to the police and brought to court. He gets caught up in the wheels of justice and ends up in prison. There, all he can do is remain silent. Based on the book and screenplay by Michael Scharang

Styria in the second half of the 18th century: It's Christmas in the forest home of the poet Peter Rosegger. During Advent, Peter, a young forest farmer, first recites his dialect stories to an elegant crowd at the Reininghaus family home, becoming a major attraction in Graz. Hans, the hostess's nephew, befriends the young man, and a close relationship of trust develops, from which each benefits in his own way. During a winter sleigh ride, Peter recounts to his friend Hans the best Christmas experiences from his childhood. He recounts how he got lost in the forest, how he went to collect Christmas cheer, and his adventures with a quaint man named Bremer Sepp.

In Spring of 1945, the Wehrmacht forces are weary from retreat, while the Allies are closing in. A single Austrian captain attempts to guide what is left of his platoon behind the Russian lines to surrender to the Americans. They take under their wing a young man with a severe disability. As the loyalty of his men is brought to the test, the captain grows closer to the boy who evokes a deep secret from his past in the Nazi Reich.
