On the mystic island of Lemuria, the cult of Ubasti seek the Egyptian Princess Nadji to sacrifice so that their goddess Ossana, whose soul resides in Nadji's body, may be resurrected by Black Magic. Nadji is located in the Far East port of Suva, but shielded by the White Magical powers of Frank Chandler, an American raised by Eastern mystics who is also known as Chandu. When Chandu takes a voyage alone, however, the evil Voice of Ubasti is able to magically spirit her to Lemuria, where Black Magic reigns supreme. Chandu sets out in pursuit with his sister Dorothy, niece Betty and nephew Bob; but, shipwrecked on the magic island, Chandu finds his family also held prisoner for sacrifice while he is plunged into an endless maze of caverns beneath the evil temple, where both his mortal and magical strength seem rendered useless.

Headed for the magic island of Lemuria, he is shipwrecked , washed ashore and captured. He becomes invisible, escapes and after numerous detours is able to rescue the princess.

Jim Hemminway went to college, but did not make good. He had a fine time, but flunked in his studies. His father, displeased with Jim's college experience, decided to send him to a lumber camp in order to develop the manhood he believed there was in him. Arriving at the camp Jim pulled off his coat and entered with spirit into the work, determined to prove to his father that he was a "chip off the old block." Shortly after arriving at the camp he had a falling out with big Tom Granger, one of the camp bosses, and the acknowledged bully of that section of the country.

A Federal spy operating within the Confederate lines, meets Hallie Coburn, a fair Southern girl, with whom he falls in love. The Spy enters into the social life. At a garden party he again meets Hallie and they become better acquainted. Gradually their acquaintance ripens into love. Hallie innocently takes the spy into the Confederate camp where he obtains needed information. Suspicion however has become directed towards him and on his attempt to invade the camp alone at night is discovered by one of the pickets and captured. He, however, makes a logical explanation of his presence in the camp and is allowed to depart. As he is leaving the spy unconsciously gives a military salute and the commander looks after him with a worried look on his face and a feeling that he is not what he claims to be. Hallie is summoned to military headquarters and told that her lover is suspected of being a spy.

In 1890, two British expatriates, Robert Herrick and Huish, and German Captain Jakob Thorbecke, are commissioned to sail a Yankee schooner called The Golden State , whose captain and crew have died of smallpox. From Tehua in the South Seas to Australia, they are to deliver a cargo of champagne. Thorbecke decides to head for Peru, however, so he can sell the merchandise and pocket the money. While sailing, Faith Wishart, daughter of the deceased captain, comes out of her hiding place on board and, by briefly holding Thorbecke at gunpoint, demands he make the delivery.
