Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister makes the most of the situation after his family unwittingly leaves him behind when they go on Christmas vacation. When thieves try to break into his home, he puts up a fight like no other.

The Scream Was Improvised: Macaulay Culkin's iconic hands-on-face scream after applying aftershave wasn't initially scripted. Director Chris Columbus revealed that Culkin was only supposed to apply the aftershave and scream, but the actor's choice to leave his hands on his face was so funny that they kept it in the film. The pose was inspired by Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream".
Buzz's Girlfriend Was a Boy: The photo of Buzz's girlfriend was actually the son of the film's art director made up to look like an unattractive girl. The director, Chris Columbus, felt it would be too cruel to make fun of a real teenage girl.
Pesci's Method Acting: Joe Pesci, known for his tough-guy roles, deliberately avoided Macaulay Culkin on set to make Kevin genuinely scared of his character, Harry. During a rehearsal, Pesci even bit Culkin's finger, breaking the skin and leaving a scar.
Fake Snow Solution: The film crew primarily used dried potato flakes to create the effect of falling snow. While it looked great on camera, it turned into a "disgusting field of rotting starch" when it melted.
"Angels With Filthy Souls" Isn't Real: The black and white gangster film Kevin watches, Angels With Filthy Souls, isn't a real movie. It was filmed specifically for Home Alone in a single day, using black and white film stock and noir lighting.
